This is Lieder singing at the highest level. All 3 cycles are rendered with exceptional vocal beauty and reveal the deepest immersion in the text. Prey, as so often, creates performances which are direct, yet alert to the subtlest nuances of text and music. He is well matched by both pianists. All three cycles are intelligently and tastefully filmed. This is a priceless and all too rare visual and aural documentation of one of the greatest Schubert interpreters of the last 100 years.

This is one of the most satisfying sets of these concertos on record and it is good to see it in print after some 50 years. The first two concertos find the pianist playing with a wonderful youthful abandon, improvising an occasional entry or reinforcing a bass line as the mood strikes him. After all, this is young Beethoven presenting himself to the Viennese public just as Mozart had done in his concertos. But these performances of #1 and #2 could never be mistaken for Mozartian classicism: they are fiercely masculine and adventurous. #3, the only stereo recording of the set, is beautifully proportioned and projected in a manner recalling Schnabel. #4’s slow movement is perfectly captured with a haunting veiled tone from the keyboard. #5 is similarly satisfying. The conducting and orchestral playing are equally marvelous, setting a firm foundation for Badura-Skoda’s disciplined freedom. Along with Gulda/Stein and Giles/Szell, this makes an overwhelmingly sucessfull survey of all 5 concerti wherein soloist and orchestra are ideally interwoven and the individuality of each work is keenly projected.

This is a very delightful collection sung with evident enjoyment by this great and lovable singer. If you have ever responded to Prey’s interpretations you will enjoy this large, well presented collection complete with charming original jacket art.

An utterly charming and beautifully characterized Mozart aria recital by Prey which has been out of circulation for far too long. The 80’s were a period when Prey was often considered to be having a vocal crisis but if so, it is hardly evident here. This is a more generous disc than his early recital with Suitner both in terms of more arias being included and even richer interpretations.

This is the most coherently and consistently interpreted complete Schubert Sonata cycle ever done. Badura-Skoda allows the listener to hear the composer’s development from the less familiar early works to the mature masterpieces. The result is that more can be heard in the supposedly ’immature’ Schubert Sonatas than ever before and a journey of artistic exploration and development emerges which puts the Schubert cycle in its rightful place beside that of Beethoven. The annotations and presentation are superb. The exquisite sounds Badura-Skoda coaxes from several historic instruments makes the case for the period piano as well or better than any other series of recordings.

Beautifully sculpted, witty, and idiomatic readings. The famous D major is wonderfully done and the 2 less familiar concerti are revealed as worthy companion works by Badura-Skoda’s matchless integration of piano and orchestral textures.
