まるで映画音楽のように壮大で劇的な『アルプス交響曲』は、リヒャルト・シュトラウスの実体験に基づいて書かれた作品です。14歳、もしくは15歳のリヒャルト・シュトラウスが挑んだのはバイエルン州とチロル州の国境にあるドイツの最高峰ツークシュピッツェ(高さ2962ｍ)。夏山の美しい自然と、荒々しい雷雨を体験した彼は登山の翌日にピアノでこの経験を再現したといいます。そして20年後の1902年に「アンチクリスト、アルプス交響曲」というタイトルでスケッチされ、一旦は4楽章の交響曲として構想されますが、結局は1911年、ガルミッシュの山荘で現在の形としての完成をみることになりました。登山の道行きは夜明けから始まり、崇高な日の出を見つつ山道を辿り、多くの自然と触れ合いながら道に迷いつつも、頂上を目指します。下山中に雷雨に遭遇、自然の脅威に畏怖するも、無事下山。登山者は無事に帰途に着くのです。ヤンソンスは冒頭からゆったりとした歩みで、各々の場面を情感豊かに描いていきます。もちろん後半のクライマックスも万全の仕上がり。ヤンソンスの細部へのこだわりと、迫力ある造形により、聴き手はまるで自分自身が登山を終えたかのような満足感を抱くでしょう。
同時収録の『死と浄化(変容)』は、20代の多感なシュトラウスの心情が反映された作品。ヤンソンスはオーケストラの持ち味を存分に生かし、うねる感情を丁寧に描き出しています。艶やかな弦楽器、パワフルな金管楽器、滑らかな木管楽器など各々のパートが渾然一体となった輝かしい響きは、バイエルン放送交響楽団の特徴とも言える独特な音色です。(輸入元情報)
