Mozart - The Great Symphonies—Walter


Initially a child prodigy who entered the Stern Conservatory of Berlin as a pianist at the age of nine, Bruno Walter (born Bruno Walter Schlesinger) decided to become a conductor at 13.

His conducting debut was with a little-known work, but he became an assistant conductor at the Hamburg Stadttheater in 1894. Guided and influenced by Gustav Mahler, he continued to keep the composer’s works alive even after his death.

By 1913, after various posts, his reputation had risen and his international career kicked off in earnest. Over the next couple of decades, he conducted the New York Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Amsterdam Concertgebouwand the Vienna State Opera and was Musical Director of the State Opera of Charlottenburg, and the Gewandhaus Concerts in Leipzig.

He moved to the United States in 1939 where he regularly conducted the New York Philharmonic and Philadelphia Orchestras. After the end of the war he resumed guest conducting in Europe. By this time, he’d created his own conducting style: restrained but flowing, warm but romantic.

Towards the end of his life, he recorded with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra a series of works from his favourite composers – Mozart, Mahler and Beethoven. And this month we are giving you another chance to revisit his most famous Columbia Symphony Orchestra recordings.
