One of the really great performances, sanctioned by Imogen Holst, and recorded in great sound. But get the 24/96kHz issue which I have and should be in every collection.

Two reasons for not buying this CD. First the same performances were released in HYBRID format which I have and will sound better on a regular CD player if your equipment is really good.
The other reason is that the interpretation of the R-K by Reiner leaves much to be desired. He plays it straight through without any affection for the many felicities of the score. Too bad. The orchestra is great and the HYBRID CD sounds wonderful.
The Stravinsky is more more compatible with Reiners no nonsense approach to the score.
Worth having in HYBRID for the orchestra, the sound, and a decent performance of the interpretation of the Stravinsky.

A very good performance by a very great orchestra and in great sound, yet without the individuality of Beecham or Stokowski in the R-K or Tcheknavorian in the Borodin.
If you love these pieces as much as I do -I have 15 of the R-K and 5 of the Borodin- this will be a ’must have.’

The Russian Easter Overture is the drawing card here. A great performance. The Khachaturian is a very good performance, too, but the music is a bit of a bot-boiler. As for the Scheherazade, get the Decca LSO perormance on CALA which is much better and in better sound. However, the sound here is much improved over the standard CD issue of these works.

What went wrong here??? Great performances of both works. I expected better sound than the RCA 20bit reissues. Instead the sound is worse, almost unlistenable on my system. It is bright and acerbic. A real let down and a puzzle since JVC XRCD remastered performances are usually the very best -even better than the RCA HYBRID CDs, albeit at a much higher price.(I have them all.)

One of the great performances of Scheherazade. Gergiev has his eye on the overall picture in contrast to Stokowski and Beecham (both in better sound) who pay more attention to individual phrases. In Gergiev’s hands the work is a single and compelling dramatic narrative.
Well worth having even if you have other performances.

This is one of the great performances of this popular piece. As a performance it is better than the Sokowski performance released on RCA or Testament. However, close comparison reveals that Sir Thomas Beecham, available on EMI, is an even finer performance. Along with Gergiev’s recent performance this Stokowski recording is one of the top 3 recorded so far.
However, shame on Japan Decca for not upgrading the sound to 24 bit 96 or 192kHs before stamping it on the new better sounding CD material.At the price they are asking it is very much overpriced!
The same performance can be had in 24 bit 96kHz on a regular CD, Cala CACD0536. It is cheaper, includes Tchaikovsky’s Marche Slave and Stokowski in Rehearsal [in English]- 79+ minutes and has very good sound- Cala always does a fine job at remastering. Listen to some of Stokowski NY Philharmonic performances from the 30’s and you won’t believe what they are able to do. Stokokski was himself always interested in the sound quality of his recordings and any reissue of them should be done with care.
Japan Decca get your act together with these reissues. Remaster them before putting them on the new high density material and I will start replacing all my copies of the great performances such as this one.
