With a total timing of over twelve-and-a-half hours this box amounts to a compendium of ballet rarities!
Having collaborated with the most notable dancers and ballet experts of the time, including Dame Alicia Markova, tireless researcher and re-creator Richard Bonynge made his first ballet recording for Decca in 1963. The Art of the Prima Ballerina was particularly celebrated for it''s informed tempi and authenticity of style.

This extensive collection brings together further recordings (made up to 1990) and includes items long sought-after by collectors — including the first international CD issue of Auber''s Marco Spada and Burgmüller''s La Péri, as well as the Méditation from Massenet''s Thaïs from the 1972 album Homage to Pavlova. Several Bonynge recordings once issued on CD but now deleted are also included.

The final three discs of the collection are each dedicated to the works of single composers — Auber, Drigo and Massenet. The last of these includes the balletic Scènes alsaciennes and Scènes dramatiques — two suites that have never been issued before on CD.

Composers arranging the work of their predecessors in vibrant orchestral colours include Britten (arranging Rossini), Roy Douglas (arranging Chopin), Roger Desormière (arranging Johann Strauss), Tommasini (arranging Scarlatti sonatas!) and Gordon Jacob adapting Lecocq''s operatic music to form a charming ballet suite. Rossini, Donizetti and Berlioz are represented by ballet music from the operas William Tell, La favorita and Les Troyens respectively.
