Conceived on the basis of an original idea of Maestro Nagano’s, The General offers an entirely new interpretation of Beethoven’s Egmont, itself based on a poem by Goethe. Offered as a tribute to Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire, this original work, written by author, critic and musicologist Paul Griffiths [1947- ], relates the staggering events surrounding the Rwanda crisis in 1994.

CD2 includes popular Beethoven’s
5th Symphony and excerpts from Egmont.

ナガノの解釈は冷徹かつ明晰だ。ブーレーズを彷彿とさせる。なかなか意思的な選曲と演奏といえよう。ナガノ政権下でのモントリオールは初めて聞くが、なかなか欧化されているのは喜ばしい限り。ただ時に日本のオケのような響きになってしまうのは面白い。エグモント関連は総じて及び腰。慎重になりすぎた嫌いがある。第５のように闊達にやってほしかった。

　デュトワのオケであったモントリオールで、ケント･ナガノ、ベートーヴェンを録音とは驚き、世界一のフランスのオーケストラと言われたモントリオール、ベートーヴェンをしなやかに演奏しており、ザ･ジェネラルは企画の勝利、ベートーヴェンの新しい作品のように光っていて魅力的です。楽しく聴けました。運命は現代のオーケストラによる最高水準の演奏で、このコンビ、今後も楽しめそうです。

5番運命だが、これが極めてハイスピードかつタイトで無駄のない解釈だ。ありがちな大仰な展開は微塵もなく、それでいて5番が本来持っている凄絶さと歓喜の昂ぶりは余すことなく表現し切っている。アゴーギクは殆ど用いず過度に律速された展開であって、それに微弱な抑揚を織り交ぜつつテンポ良く駆け抜けている。この演奏ではアクセントの効いたティンパニのアフター・ビート（少し遅れた拍子どり）が異色中の異色であり、独特の高揚感と緊張感をドラマティックに演出している。それ以外にトリッキーな部分は見られない。まさに21世紀にふさわしい知
