アンドルー・パロットによって1973年にロンドンで結成された古楽グループ「タヴァナー・コンソート＆プレイヤーズ」の活動初期の代表作。
　キリストの誕生・苦悩・復活の物語が描いた人気作に対し、パロットは自然体のテンポを基本としたアプローチで、各パートをクリアに響かせ、澄んだ美しさの中にも対位法的なおもしろさを聴かせています。合唱はじめ、カークビーやボウマンのソロも高水準です。（ＨＭＶ）

メンブランのヘンデルポートレート（１０CD...

メンブランのヘンデルポートレート（１０CD）と同時にこのパロットのメサイアを購入した。このディスクには少し失望した。パロットにしては、テンポが遅めで緩慢な感じがする。メサイアには気に入った演奏にめぐり合えないなとつくずく感じる。

メサイアがヘンデルの３０曲近いオラトリオの最高傑作だとは少しも思わないが、有名曲故に名盤が多いのは確かだ。中でも、少年合唱を使い、ソプラノをカークビーが歌ったホグウッド盤や、雅という言葉がぴったりのマクリーシュ盤、そしてゆったりしたテンポと、合唱の上手さ、明るさに特徴のあるパロット盤がベスト３だと思う。後は好き好きだろう。パロット盤は合唱に少年は使わず、アルトパートはアルトとカウンターテノールの混合だが、僕はこのやり方を好む。パロット盤の欠点を強いて挙げれば、一つはバスのソロがあまり上手くないこと。もう一つは、ホグウッド盤では第６曲と第３６曲をソプラノに移調し、カークビーに歌わせているのが美しく、マクリーシュ盤もソプラノを起用しているのに対して、パロット盤はカウンターテノールに歌わせている点。第６曲のアリアは元々バス用のものをイタリア人カストラート、ガエターノ・グァダーニの為にヘンデルが書き直したもの。メサイアを遥かに凌ぐ、彼の最高傑作の一つイェフタ作曲中の1751年版、孤児養育院での恒例の版もアルト又はカストラート用。パロットもそれを重視しカウンターテノールに歌わせたのかも知れないが、ソプラノの美しさにはかなわない。もっとも、第３６曲はバスに歌わせているＣＤも多く、それよりはよほど良いが。
