この曲には、ハレ、バルビローリ、ベーカーの歴史的名盤があります。同じオケで、３８年を経て、自主レーベルで取り上げた意気や良し、やはり、現代的、スケール感では、やや及ばずの感ありますが、美麗に暖かくこの斬新なエルガーの名曲を聴かせてくれました。エルダーは、イギリス音楽だけでなく、オペラ、シカゴ響などにも客演、広いレパートリーを披露しています。この名曲は、死、そのものを描いた貴重な作品。２１世紀に、往くであろうひとには（もちろん、それ以前に家族、友人の死に合われた方々にも）、聴いて噛み締める価値ある演奏。

エルガー（1857-1934）

近代イギリスを代表する作曲家、サー・エドワード・ウィリアム・エルガーは、1857年6月2日、イギリス中西部ウスター近郊のブロードヒースで生まれました。経済的に恵まれなかったため正規の音楽教育を受けることができず、ほとんど独学で勉強したそうですが、ピアノ調律師で楽器商を営んでいた父親のウィリアムは、生業のかたわら聖ジョージ・ローマ・カトリック教会のオルガニストを務めていたそうですから、やはりその血の
