ＬＰ時代に「擦り切れるほど」聴いた名盤。３～６番は今なお最高の演奏に列せられるだろう。特に、６番のふくよかな響きと絶妙のテンポ感、表情づけは、ちょっと「奇跡的」な名演奏ではなかろうか？（私はこれは、コンサートマスターのマイヤーが参加していないのが幸いしたのだと思っている）。harmonia mundiの録音は60年代であってもあなどるべからず。大編成の宗教曲はさすがにキツイが、それを除けばどの盤も優秀録音とお考えいただいてよい。

シゲティの技術の衰えと無愛想なほどの無骨な音色で灰汁の強い演奏だが、月並みな言い方ながら、真摯さが感じられ、独特な味わいだ。カール・リヒターらに通じる峻厳な姿勢は近寄りがたく、テクニックの衰えも目立ち始めているが、名盤がひしめく中、孤高の名演として今もって惹かれるファンが絶えない。それはただ構成力や禁欲的な響きや全体的な解釈の印象だけはなく、歌い回しなどベテランらしい巧みな表現力が生理的な衰えをカバーしていることが大きいのかもしれない。知ったかぶりしたことを縷々書き連ねたが、これは良くも悪くも巨匠として名を成したゆえに、許された演奏だろう。好みの割れることは当然だ。ヴァンガードというマイナーなレーベルに録音されたにも関わらず、カタログから消えないのは、ヒストリカルファンとしては有難いことだ。
