Thanks to Karajan's charisma, he was able to give impressive performances with the Turin and Rome RAI Symphony Orchestras, performances that are indelibly marked by his strong personality. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 was recorded at the RAI Auditorium in Turin on 1st March 1953, when Karajan was making his first LP recording of this work with the Philharmonia Orchestra, which he began in July 1952 and completed in the autumn of the following year. Also included is a triumphant performance of Sibelius's Finlandia, one of the orchestral works most loved by Karajan.

今まで聴いた1950年代前半のRAIトリノ交響楽団の録音は、どれもAM放送のエアチェックのような鮮明度に欠けるものばかりでしたが、このCDに含まれるフィンランディアの音質には本当に驚かされました。近年の録音と遜色ないあまりにも鮮明な録音のため、演奏ミスが目立ちますが、本来はこんなに高音質で録音することも出来た（ｏｒ録音されていた？）のかと思うと、チェリビダッケやフルトヴェングラーなど他の指揮者の客演の録音もこの音質で残されていたら・・・と残念な気持ちになりました。ともあれ、カラヤンがイタリアの演奏技術に不安のあるオケを指揮したヒストリカルな記録として、一聴の価値はあると思いました。
