    しかしチェーホフの洒落はピリ辛い。 そして実によくきく洒落だ。 もしチェーホフがこの目まぐるしい現代にタイムスリップしたとしても現代にあった立派な作品を書いてしまうだろう。 それほど頭のキレと回転のよさを感じる。 社会や人間観察のするどさ。 チェーホフの短篇小説は帝政末期のロシア社会の百科事典といわれているそうだが、例えば「酷寒」では寒さを通してロシアとロシア人気質をユーモアたっぷりに語っており興味深い小品だ。 また「川のほとり」では流氷を通して多くのをことを伝えている。
