F. A. Hoffmeister numbers among the composers born during the 1750s who distanced themselves from the genre of the symphony during the 1790s without completely refraining from composing such works. It is not entirely clear how many symphonies Hoffmeister composed. Forty-four have been identified so far, of which at least forty-two had been composed by 1792. Hoffmeister then let a decade pass before presenting himself to the public with his last symphonies, heard on this recording. The overture from Der Knigssohn aus Ithaka, one of his most successful stage works, rounds off this CD.

ホフマイスターの交響曲はチャンドスレーベルからも出ているが、まだまだ十分なディスク数とは言えないので新録音の登場は歓迎すべきものである。オケはハイぺリオンレーベルでシュポアの交響曲録音を行っている。 モダン楽器を使用していると思われるが、ノンヴィブラート奏法をかなり効かせている。交響曲はいずれも4楽章からなっていて第1楽章には序奏部が付いている。メヌエット楽章はなかなか良い音楽に感じられた。
