Most listeners are no doubt familiar with the opening Adagio of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 10. The Adagio is the only portion of the work that was completed by the composer. Mahler began the work in the summer of 1910, a period of great personal turmoil, but his death in the spring of 1911 prevented its completion. There have been a number of attempts to complete the work from sketches left by Mahler, perhaps the most famous effort was by the musicologist Deryck Cooke.
This recording features a new performing version by Remo Mazzetti, a musicologist who has studied every available version of the work. The performance is by the Cincinnati Symphony under the direction of Jes s L pez-Cobos, the orchestra and conductor who premiered the Mazzetti edition in 1999.
The symphony is a wrenching affair that balances tragedy and tranquillity. The opening Adagio, elegiac in tone, is played with passion under L pez-Cobos' direction. The second movement Scherzo is suitably raucous, while the third movement Purgatorio is agitated. The final two movements, Scherzo II and Finale are fiery and ultimately, restive. Telarc's vivid sound quality complements this excellent performance.

　Mahler no10. Mazetti version. Jesus Lopez-Cobos/Cincinnati SO. この明瞭、透徹の演奏を聴くと、十番は始めからマーラーは彼岸に在って、此岸の者が聴くように定まっていた、そして七番で頂点に達し、九番で告別されたとの感が、この十番の一楽章と五楽章を聴くと深く致します。Telarc の録音がまた素晴しい。―review ではなく、全く私的な印象です。

随所にそっと添えられる音がお洒落。重厚にしてくどすぎず。透明感という意味では他の完成版の追随を許さない。死後百年になろうとする今でも「彼の新作」が聴けるのは幸せ。

第一版から較してクック版に近づいた感じを受けました。曲が作曲者の手を離れて９０年経過してまだ成長を続けていることに驚きます。演奏のイメージも死を目前とした諦観ではなく、このＣＤのジャケットのように新たな世界へ飛び立って行く境地を表現したものになっているよ
