Hot on the heels of last year's rocking 'When I Was Cruel', Elvis Costello returns with 'North', a collection piano-based ballads written around the universal theme of being in and out of love. Released on the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label (the classical division of Universal Music), 'North' consists of eleven perfectly-crafted adult pop songs for those "late-night listening" moments, with the addition of memorable up-tempo material with a characteristically Costello feel. "The record begins with a song called 'You Left Me In The Dark' and ends with a track called 'I'm In The Mood Again'",says Elvis. "You have to listen to what goes on in between to find out why". Musical guests on the album include the Attractions' Steve Nieve on keyboards and Pete Thomas on drums, plus the Brodsky Quartet, Lee Konitz (saxophone), Marc Ribot (guitar), and members of the Mingus Big Band.

作品としては、優れているんですよね、きっと..。でも、リアルタイムから聴き続けてきた為にどうしても初期の衝動的な作風を彼に求めてしまいます。聴いていて、全部同じに聴こえてきます。これって、変な評価ですか..？ラモーンズじゃないんだから、作風が変わっていくのは当然ですよね。特に彼の様に才能がある人間ならば..。私がついていけないだけかも知れないです。それでも、新譜を買い続けている私はもっと変..？

あたりまえだが、通常のCDより[SACD]は音が良く奥行きや拡がりも増していて、コステロのヴォーカルがより自然にバックの演奏とバランス良く溶け込む。あらためて、傑作という思いに浸る。
