Originally released in 1982, 'Imperial Bedroom' is many people's all-time favourite Costello album, a sentiment that will be reinforced by this deluxe 2CD edition. Preceded by 'Almost Blue', his successful album of country covers, Elvis Costello had accumulated a large stockpile of songs and hired the Beatles' engineer Geoff Emerick to help record them. The results included such classics as 'Man Out Of Time', 'Beyond Belief' and 'Almost Blue'.
The bonus disc for 'Imperial Bedroom' contains 23 tracks, 13 of which are previously unreleased. Due to the quality of the musicianship, most of the songs were recorded in markedly different arrangements. Whilst the alternate, fast version of 'Town Cryer' was released as a single B-side, the remainder of the alternate versions (including the 'punkish' version of 'Man Out Of Time') see the light of day for the very first time, along with five solo demos and a group rehearsal.

「スパイク」までチャーミング路線などつづいてはイナイ。次の「パンチザクロック」をチャーミングと言えば言えるが、この作品はずっとほろ苦さがある。コステロ自身「『パンチザクロック』はすっかり『インペリアルベッドルーム』（の良さ）を忘れてしまっていた」と語っている。コステロに路線など無く、同じ事は続けない。しかし、このアルバムはポップ。コステロを聴く人は、[2CD]版で買進める事をおすすめいたします。

良くも悪くもｺｽﾃﾛの転換期のｱﾙﾊﾞﾑかな。ここから｢ｽﾊﾟｲｸ｣を出すまで彼のﾁｬｰﾐﾝｸﾞ路線が続く。世間的評価は中だるみの時期。でもこの頃のｺｽﾃﾛはけっこう好きだな

次回作「パンチザクロック」よりも色褪せないポップさ。初心者にもベテランさんも受けの良いアルバム。ジャケでためらったなら失敗します。「オールディスユースレスビューティー」で再びエメリックと組むコステロ。
