ノーマン・グランツが1951年にジョニー・ホッジスとレコーディング契約を結んだのは、ホッジスがデューク・エリントン・オーケストラを離れ、自分の小さなバンドを率いるための序曲だった。4年後、ホッジスは再びエリントン楽団に戻ったが、グランツのもとでは自分の名前でレコーディングを続けた。そして本作は1958年と1959年に録音されたもので、エリントンが30年代にホッジスや彼のオーケストラの他のメンバーと録音した小編成のセッションを思い起こさせる。
