分厚いオケの交響が迫力十分で、とりわけ金管群の咆哮にはスカッとする。 ショルティはテンポをいじったり、思い入れたっぷりの表現はしていないようだ。だから彼は「マッチョな演奏」「精神性などはクソくらえ」などと評されるのだろう。だからと言って、この演奏は決して一本調子で押し切る演奏ではない。メランコリックなチャイコ節は歌われているし、派手なクライマックスは、それ来た！とばかり盛り上がる。痛快な演奏だ。強いて言えば、ムラヴィンスキーの厳しさ、カラヤンのうねり、と言ったような「味」がないかなあ、と一抹の物足りなさを感じる。立派な交響楽演奏と感嘆しつつも、好みの問題かも知れないが、何かもうひとう欲しいとは思う。
