「私は奇妙な身の上に生まれた」。こうして幕を開ける「ベンジャミン・バトン 数奇な人生」は、80歳で生まれ、そこから若返っていくひとりの男の姿を描いた1920年代にF・スコット・フィッツジェラルドが執筆した短編小説の映画化作品。普通の人々と同じく彼にも時の流れを止めることはできない。ニューオリンズを舞台に、1918年の第一次世界大戦から21世紀に至るまでの、ベンジャミンの誰とも違う人生の旅路を描く。

監督は、鬼才デビッド・フィンチャー。また、出演はブラッド・ピット、ケイト・ブランシェット、ティルダ・スウィントン、ジュリア・オーモンドと豪華キャストが競演。
また、見所は何と言っても老人から生まれ、若返っていくブラッド・ピットが演じる主人公ベンジャミン･バトン。ブラッド・ピットの顔を取り込み、最新ＣＧ技術によって誕生した７０代の老人姿から、メークアップ・スペシャリストによって段々と若返っていく６０代の姿、４４歳の実年齢姿で登場する４０代の姿など様々な年代が登場する。さらに若返った２０代の姿では、誰も見たことがない最も美しいブラッド・ピットが登場すると言われている。
