ファースト・アルバム「Songs in A Minor」では新人として異例となる5部門もグラミー賞を受賞したAliciaですが、2ndとなる「Diary Of」も前作に引けをとらない素晴らしい内容です。よりヒップホップよりになっていた昨今のR&Bシーンには珍しいくらいオールド・ソウル風の楽曲が多く、アリシアがこれまで影響を受けてきた音楽へのリスペクトや情熱がこもった作品となっています。
アルバムからは"You Don't Know My Name"（Kanye Westプロデュース）、"If I Ain't Got You "、"Karma"が大ヒットを記録。またUsherとのデュエット曲"My Boo"でも全米チャート1位を獲得しています。

7歳でピアノを始めクラシック音楽を勉強し、ジャズにものめり込み、14歳の若さでソングライティングを始めたという。彼女のインスピレーションの源はStevie Wonder、Marvin Gaye、Nina Simone、Donny Hathaway、そしてNotorious Big、2 Pac、Jay Z、Wu Tang Clan といったアーティストたち。
大学へ進学するはずだったのが、コロンビア・レコードと初の契約を結んだ彼女は、夢を追い求めるために通学を諦めるかどうかの決断を迫られていた。だが自由に楽曲制作をさせてもらえないことに苛立ちをおぼえ、結局“創造性の違い”からコロンビア・レコードを離れる。
そんな彼女をかのクライヴ・デイヴィスが引き抜き自身が立ち上げたJ Recordsのアーティストとして迎え入れる。そして 2001年6月26日デビューアルバム「Songs In A Minor」を遂にリリース。チャート第1位でデビューを飾る。その後29週もトップ20に残り、世界中で1000万枚以上のセールスを記録。また、手にした賞も数多く、グラミーでは「ベスト・ニュー・アーティスト」にとどまらず、「ベストR&Bヴォーカル・パフォーマンス」、「ベストR&Bソング」、「ベストR&Bアルバム」を受賞。またデビュー・シングル「フォーリン」でも「ソング・オブ・ザ・イヤー」を獲得した。
また彼女の魅力は、ヒップホップ・ナンバーをサンプリングし、巧みにループさせることで、美しいコード感を作り上げているサウンドや、ピアノを多用した極上のR&Bトラックでも音楽的センスの高さをみせつけている。そして歌のウマさ、ピアノのテクニックも極上。 2003年12月3日、セカンド・アルバム「Diary Of」をリリース。
