The first of the Sibelius Symphonies was the last one recorded in Ormandy’s large Sibelius survey with the Philadelphia Orchestra and RCA. I attended the concerts just before the recording session, and Ormandy was in perfect form! If you want to explore Sibelius, Start with Symphony #1, and definitely include #2, #4, #5, and #7, along with the Violin Concerto and many of the Tone poems, included in this remarkable group.
