アシュケナージさんの再録音。旧盤のクリーヴランドとの録音は、指揮者としてのレコーディング・キャリアの初期に当たり、アシュケナージさんがとても意欲的で、そしてそれがよい方向に働き、結構な出来栄えでありました。指揮者としてのキャリアを十分に積んでの今回は、「手慣れた感」や「オケへのお任せ感」があって、どこか気持ちの入っていない、「流し仕事」という印象で、実はちょっとがっかりしました。盛り上がりも落ち着いた抒情も、どちらも今一歩です。フィルアップの「ばらの騎士」も同様で、ちっとも楽しくない。スランプとまでは言いませんが、アシュケナージさんとチェコフィルとの録音は、どれもいいと思わないのであります。録音は優秀。

Readers of my occasional reviews may remember how highly I rated the original ONDINE issue.This superb reissue in markedly improved sound on the CANYON label would now,I think,be my first choice in this work.It is only slightly inferior to Karajan’s as an interpretation but has a far more natural sound and the benefit of a fillup.Collectors will not do much better

This,the strangest of combinations between a Finnish record company,a Czech orchestra,and a Russian conductor,have here,against all preconcieved ideas, produced probably the nmost beautiful sound ever accorded to this symphony.Recorded in the lovely acoustics of the Rudolfinum Hall in Prague no one buying this version should feel in any way disappointed.I would recommend it highly,and although Karajan still remains,for me,the top recommendation as an interpretation,it is not as well recorded as this one
