日本ではショルティのヴェルディ演奏はレクイエム以外ほぼ黙殺されてしまった。不思議な話である。凡庸な一部批評家のせいでユーザーが不利益を被った例はこれだけではない。我々も自分の耳で厳しく演奏を見極めなくてはならない。閑話休題この演奏を聴くと、「アイーダ」が近世ヨーロッパのドラマではなく、古代世界の物語であることを納得させられる。ショルティの表現は実に豪快にしてダイナミック。ヴェルディが意図したと思われる古代の遺跡や彫像に通ずる率直で硬質なドラマティシズムをあますところなく表現している。そこから古代人の質朴な愛憎の葛藤も浮かび上がってくる。
