ピアニストのミハイル・プレトニョフがロシア・ナショナル管弦楽団（RNO）を創設したのは1990年でした。最初の録音はチャイコフスキーの交響曲第6番『悲愴』。作品を深く洞察し、それを音に表現した演奏に対し、英グラモフォン誌のジョナサン・スウェインが、「ムラヴィンスキーの録音と肩を並べる最新の『悲愴』、レニングラード・フィルハーモニックに匹敵するオーケストラ、驚くほど見事にピアノから指揮台に移ってみせたプレトニョフ」(The Grammophone 1992年1月号) と賛辞を呈しました。
