Why--considering that the CD market is already clogged with recordings of Tchaikovsky's 'Nutcracker'--should you buy this one? There are many cheaper recordings available, and it's one of those works which is so well-known and often-performed that truly bad performances just don't make it into the already-crowded field.
Quite simply, you should buy this recording because if it is not the single best one available on CD, it is among those at the top of the heap. Valery Gergiev and the Kirov Orchestra have brought their magic to yet another Russian masterpiece, as they have done many times already with Russian operas on Philips and in performances around the world. Here, they present the complete 'Nutcracker' rather than just the suite, snugly fit on just one CD. All of the suite's well-known excerpts are here, along with all of the first-rate music that comes in between them. Do yourself a favor and don't pass Gergiev and company over for a lesser recording of the complete work, or even for a great performance of the suite.

全曲が一枚に収まったということで、何かよほど快速テンポなのかなと予想しましたが、聴いている間は特にそんな速さやましてせわしなさを感じることもなく、すいすいと流れてゆくそのテンポのよさに身を委ねてむしろ大いに楽しんだというのが感想です。仕上がりは上々で、荒いところはないし、物語にふさわしい快活な気分があって、私は気に入りました。おとぎ話的な雰囲気は希薄かもしれませんが、ま、こういうのも一つのあり方。結構でしょう。録音も優秀。

聴いてみて面白いのだけれどどうも落ち着かない「くるみ割り」です。まるで後ろから怖いものに追いかけられているみたいで、聴いているこっちまでせわしくなってきそうです。必死の形相でオケの団員が演奏している様に想像してしまう。「くるみ割り人形」全曲盤の購入を検討している方のために他の演奏の時間を載せておきますので参考にしてください。マーク・エルムレル　【92：26】　ウラディミール・アシュケナージ　【91：11】　ハンス・フォンク　【88：48】　リチャード・ボニング　【88：02】　ジョン・ランチベリー　【87：27】　マリス・ヤンソンス　【86：48】　デイヴィット・マニノフ　【86：44】　マイケル・ティルソン・トーマス　【86：28】　アンドレ・プレヴィン　【84：52】　エルネスト・アンセルメ　【83：54】　アンタル・ドラティ　【83：05】　ヴァレリー・ゲルギエフ　【80：58】　（各CDの演奏時間は単純に、表示された各曲の演奏タイムを足し算した合計ですので曲間は入っておりません。それから、ハンス・フォンクは廃盤になっています）こうやって比べてみるとゲルギエフのはちょっと異常に見えます。

やはりゲルギエフは生粋の劇場指揮者なんだなと再確認できるディスク。実際に踊ることは不可能なテンポでありながら、ちゃんと「バレエの音楽」になっている点が素晴らしい。聴いていてバレエのステージが目に浮かぶ。プレヴィン盤のようなコンサートスタイルのくるみにも魅力はあるが、やはりバレエ曲であることを考えると、当盤に勝るディスクは現在のところないと思う。
