Product Description

FRANZ SCHUBERT: Symphonies Nos. 5, 6, 8 "Unfinished" , 9 "Die Grose"

Camerata Academica des Mozarteums Salzburg
SANDOR VEGH, Conductor

Recorded 1990, 1993

The Legendary Sandor Vegh Recordings, now available on 2CD-Set

Sandor Vegh deceased on 7 January 1997 in Salzburg. He was a student of the violin virtuoso and composer Jeno Hubay and a friend of the pianist and composer Bela Bartok. As a conductor, he was admired by Sergiu Celibidache. With his quartet, he was also known for its cycles of all the quartets of Beethoven and Bartok. Since 1978, he headed for many years the Camerata Academica in Salzburg. With him, as a conductor, becomes to realisation also the legendary recordings of Franz Schubert’s Symphonies 5, 6 and 8, and the “Unfinished” and the “Great”

The once widespread notion that, with his creative work, Franz Schubert found himself in accord with his contemporaries has already been shown, by the faltering reception of many masterpieces, to belong to the realm of legend. Only about a tenth of his total Output was produced in print by the time of his death in 1828; only very late did works such as “the Great C major symphony”, and the “Unfinished” or the C major String quintet find their way into concert halls.
