Where does the time go? Someone once maintained that it 'keeps on slipping into the future.' Maybe so, but it's a question for physicists and philosophers, not musicians. In the years since PW3's second release, 'Squirting Flower,' global and local events continued to play a role in the evolution of the band's outlook and expression. The opening cut of this offering, Mallow, refers to a plant species native to the high prairie. This short tone poem gives way to a group arranged piece entitled Parallel Lines Meet To Form Congruent Right Triangles, a phrase lifted from a high school geometry test answer that appeals to our fascination with faulty logic. The journey takes a waltzing right angle turn into Summer Circus, a song that recalls our days of rehearsing and writing at The Logan School, a venerable structure that has since been razed for yet another desperately needed parking lot. Again, time slips. Nobody Could Have Predicted, one might say, but that's just because we're not being given all the clues. The second half of the work begins with a piece inspired by the death of Spalding Gray, Misadventure Was The Likely Cause Of Death, continuing the band's ethic of connecting the music to what's real. Adios Mojados plays grimly on a common Hollywood Western clich, and expresses our profound regret at the repugnant desire to 'disappear' millions through deportation that recalls the most evil chapters in our history. Dilemma Of A Good German is a historical foray into the roots of the idea of 'going along to get along.' Pleasant Euro melodies mask an undercurrent of regret. Have we learned the lessons of the past century? Time slips on, refusing to tell. Finally, an ambiguous prediction reflects on a culture poised to devour itself in The Next Big Thing Might Be The Last. Should we be afraid or amused? Both, perhaps...
