20代のマイルス・デイヴィスは1952〜54年の間、ブルーノートに3回のセッションを記録。本作は52年と53年の録音から収録した、ブルーノート1500番台最初の作品。前者は先輩ケニー・クラーク、オスカー・ペティフォードと、後輩ジャッキー・マクリーンが参加。「ディア・オールド・ストック・ホルム」、「イエスタデイズ」が有名。アート・ブレイキーとヒース兄弟が加わる後者は、不滅の傑作「テンパス・フュージット」を含む。その音楽は、燃えるようなビバップから美しいバラードまで、彼の初期のスタイルの特徴をすべて示している。
