Product Description

My Sixth will propound riddles the solution of which may be attempted only by a generation which has absorbed and digested my first five symphonies.' Thus Gustav Mahler, writing in 1904 to his biographer Richard Specht. Mahler did nothing to help solve the riddles, and these words are his only authentic statement regarding this most difficult symphony. It remains puzzling, beginning with the discrepancy between this fatalistic music that ends in total collapse and his situation at the time (1903/1904).

2008年10月の録音がなぜ今まで出なかったのか不思議だが、もともと6番はノット向きの曲だろうと思っていた。全曲で80分台、CD1枚にかろうじて納まるやや速めのテンポで、予想通りの名演。例によって、きわめて精度高く音楽を磨き上げているが、基本的に楽譜に｢何も足さない｣タイプの演奏なので、バーンスタインやテンシュテットのような｢巨匠的｣なスタイルを望む人は物足りなく思うかもしれない。でも、すべてが過不足なく行われているという安定感にとどまらぬテンションの高さは、やはり尊重すべきだ。この曲の終楽章は指揮者、オケともに真の実力が問われる修羅場だが、細部まで克明で、かつ最後までまったくスタミナ切れせぬ演奏はお見事。バンベルク響もカイルベルトやシュタインが振っていた頃のひなびた面影はもはやなく、まるでミニ･ベルリン・フィルだ。中間楽章はHMVレビューの通り、スケルツォ/アンダンテの順。
