Experience overwhelming sonics on this 2 LP Decca. Mahler Symphony No. 3 by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta with Maureen Forrester, contralto. Considered to be one of the best Decca recordings; made in March 1978 in Royce Hall, U.S.A. by recording engineers James Lock and Simon Eadon. Mastered by noted mastering engineer Willem Makkee from the original tapes on a Neumann VMS 80 lathe. ( Acoustic Sounds )

初出時すぐに輸入盤ＬＰで買ったが，ちょっと聴いて個人的に超低音の伸びに不満がありしばらく放置していた（愛聴していたバーンスタインのソニー国内盤ＬＰがハウリング的重低音で凄かったため：輸入盤ＬＰやＣＤではローカットされている）。その後，オーディオ誌で長岡氏が絶賛していたので，改めて大音量で聴き直したら「ボディーブローのようなグランカッサ」は確かに最新の録音でも未だに太刀打ちできないほど凄くて，自分の聴き方の偏見の大きさを反省した（ちなみに他の家で30cm3wayブックシェルフＳＰで再生したら，腰くだけでうまく再生できなかった）。内周や合唱が入ると透明感を失うのは装置の限界かと感じたが，新しいカッティングには期待したい。再生装置の真価が問われるソースだと思う。
