From the first ominous notes in the orchestra we hear why Zubin Mehta's recording of Mahler's Symphony No.2 ("Resurrection") has been reissued as a classic. Under Mehta's direction, the Weiner Philharmoniker navigates us through the complex and quick turns of the dark first movement. Mahler consciously imitated Beethoven's use of the chorus in this Symphony, and it is with great loveliness that Christa Ludwig's contralto enters for the first time. The final movement begins with a rich Wagnerian depiction of the day of resurrection, leading to the powerful choral finale, which is in actuality more understated than the work by Beethoven which inspired Mahler. But perhaps the most remarkable element of this performance is the relatively quick speed at which it passes: it is over all too soon, and regarding a piece such as this, searching out this kind of recording can be a rewarding effort.

これはいいですね。こう来て欲しいと思ったとおり演奏してくれます。メータの最高作品のひとつに数えられるのではないでしょうか。

メータは、この時期がベストでした。このCDと並びブラームス1番、シューマン全集、ブルックナー８番などが記憶に残っています。録音も非常に良い。

言わずと知れた名盤ですが従来盤は持っておらず、SHM-SACDとしてこの盤のリマスタリング盤を所持しています。演奏については諸氏の仰る通り、非常に情熱的でドラマティック、合掌も一切隙がなく、ハチャトゥリアンの自作自演以来の本気のウィーン・フィルを聴くことが出来、もうこれ以上言うことはないでしょう。しかしひとつ問題があります。それは第一楽章のみだと思われますが、頻繁に音場が切り替わり、例えば１８小節のOb＆Eng.Hornの旋律が始まった瞬間にそれまで右に自然に定位していた低弦が引っ込み木管にフォーカスが当たるものになり、４１小節目のtuttiで再び冒頭のような音場に戻る……という不可解な編集がこの楽章の至る所で行われているという問題です。アナログの時代であり、マスターテープ由来で取りかえせなかったから、という制約もありますが、これがこの演奏の価値に大きな傷をつけていると思うのは私だけではないはずです。以前フルトヴェングラー作、アルブレヒト指揮の交響曲全集（廃盤）でも同様のことがあり否定的にレビューしましたが、もうDSD録音の時代に発生しようがないにせよ、このようなテープを切り貼りした痕跡がはっきりした演奏が現れないようにと切に願う次第です。しかしそれさえ我慢できれば、私の好きな小澤/SKOやテンシュテット1989Liveをも凌駕する、驚異的な音楽であることに変わりはありません。
