Rafael Kubelik made a similar pairing of Mahler with Viennese Classicism, again with the Vienna Philharmonic, when he performed Schubert’s Tragic Symphony No. 4 in c minor D 417 and Mahler’s Lied von der Erde. The Schubert symphony, with its melancholic opening movement and pugnacious closing Allegro, led as it were seamlessly into the fatalistic drinking song at the beginning of the Mahler and into the evening ambience of the ensuing movements. With Hilde Rossel-Majdan and Waldemar Kmentt, Kubelik had two soloists who were able to follow superbly the conductor’s precise phrasing and his ability to spread out the work’s sound colours before them. ライヴならではの揺れ動き、ギリギリの緊張...

ライヴならではの揺れ動き、ギリギリの緊張感の中でみせる妙技、最後の絶唱。たいへん感銘を受けた。第1楽章の、最後の決めの音。あれはワルター盤が素晴らしかった。バーンスタインも力強いが、ワルターとは違う。それは何なのだろうと長年考えていたが、最近思ったことがある。音と音の間にある静寂。それこそ最も雄弁なのではないか、と。ワルターの独特のヒンヤリ感とは違うが、クーベリックの表現もまた素晴らしかった。マーラーでは必死さが伝わるウィーンフィルだが、シューベルトだとまさに水を得た魚。なんて生き生きしているのだろう。素晴らしい盤だ。

この盤は凄い。「大地」は間違いなく後年のアウディーテ盤以上で２人の歌手も優れている。シューベルトも面白い。メヌエットではウィーンフィルがやりたい放題！しかし終楽章では一気にクーベリックが手綱を取り返すなどオケとの丁々発止が繰り広げられている。期待をはるかに上まわる内容だ。

当日のプログラムをそのまま収録したのは良かった。クーベリックの2種類目となる『大地の歌』は確かに貴重で、オーボエを始め、独特のウィーンの音色に聴き惚れる。だが、それ以上にありがたいのはサブのシューベルト。評者は同じ演奏者によるEMIのセッション録音をレコード時代に愛聴していたが（併収は『未完成』で、こちらは不完全燃焼の演奏だった）、このライブも基本線は同じ。ともかく、当時のウィーン・フィルの自発的な音楽づくり、その陶酔的な愉悦感は、他に代え難いもの。昔のウィーン・フィルが好きな人なら絶対に聴くべき演奏。
