チャーリー・ヘイデンと名人ハンク・ジョーンズのベースとピアノのデュオ作品。ヘイデンは多くのデュオ作品を残したがピアノ作品が特に多い。その中で本作の特徴はかなりゴスペル色が強いことだと思う。普段、ゴスペルを聴く人は果たしてどれくらいいるだろうか？私自身、ゴスペル歌手というのは数えるほどしか知らない(ソウルも歌う人ならいっぱいいるが)し、ゴスペルアルバムもほとんど持っていない。そんな私のようなゴスペルに詳しくないリスナーにとっては貴重なコレクションになるのはずである。

こういうアルバムが聴きたいと思うときがある。日頃の喧噪を忘れ、ゆったりと時間が流れてほしいと願う時だ。このアルバムはチャーリーのオリジナル曲も含め、古くから伝えられてきたスピリチュアルソングを、大物二人が奇をてらわず、アットホームな雰囲気で演奏していく。「古き良きアメリカ」という月並みな表現がこの演奏を前にすると「いや、月並みじゃない。その通りだ。」と思えてしまう。愛聴盤のひとつだ。

素朴でなつかしさを感じるメロディの数々を超一流ジャズミュージシャンの二人が淡々と紡いでく‥。なつかしく、ほっと心が和む、そしてきわめてクオリティの高い、素敵な癒しの音楽です。是非お勧め。
