Georg Tintner couples a blazing performance of the Symphony in d, known as 'Die Nullte' or No. 0 with a rare performance of the original 1887 version of the mighty Symphony No. 8 in c. Symphony No. 0 is actually Bruckner's third, following both the 'Study Symphony,' sometimes known as Symphony No. 00, and the official No. 1. Although included comparatively rarely in complete surveys of the Bruckner symphonies, it is a fine work of the composer's full maturity.
Symphony No. 8 was composed in 1887. In 1890 the composer undertook a complete revision, replacing the trio of the scherzo plus other cuts and revisions as well as a wholesale reorchestration of the score. Normally heard in either Nowak's edition of the 1890 revision or Haas' version of the same score, which restores about a third of the cut material, it is here presented as originally composed in 1887. Although obviously a supplement to a performance of the 1890 edition, the recording offers a fascinating insight into the workings of Bruckner's mind. The octogenarian Tintner has devoted his entire performing career to the music of Bruckner. Here he provides glowing performances at a budget price.

ブルックナーも「もっと魂をゆさぶる圧倒的な響き、心にしみる清澄な響きはないものか」とついつい別演を見るたびに（特に良いレビューがついている度に）買いこんでしまう作曲家である。、版の問題に興味のない私でさえそうなのだから、そこが気になる方ならば各曲数十枚はコレクションしてしまわれるであろう。さて、このティントナー盤は、０番が良いとの評価を各所で目にして購入した。たしかに、０番がこれほど良い曲に聴こえる演奏は私の聴いた限りでは他にない。８番の初演版はインバルで聴きこんでいたので、版としての新しさは感じなかった。両曲を通じて言えるのは、実に誠実でまっすぐな演奏であるということだ。オーケストラの各奏者も、録音技師も、皆ティントナーに感化されたかのように虚飾を排しひたすらブルックナーの書いた音楽がどうすれば聴く者に最もストレートに通じるか、だけを考えて仕事をしているように聴こえる。
