Leonard Bernstein and the Wiener Philharmoniker perform Brahms orchestral works. Between 1981 and 1984 Leonard Bernstein recorded nearly all of Brahms's orchestral works with the Wiener Philharmoniker to honor the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth in 1983. For the concertos, Bernstein enlisted the services of some of the finest Brahms interpreters of the time: The violoninst Gidon Kremer, the cellist Mischa Maisky and the pianist Krystian Zimerman.

以前は、1番もCD化されていたが、再録音のあおりか、映像以外は現時点では手に入にくいようだ。映像でみると感銘度が一層高いが、持ち運び（ダウンロードは別として）などを考えると、1番もCDがあっても良いのではと思った。遅いテンポ、濃厚なロマン、一般的なこの曲のイメージよりもこってりした個性的な演奏だ。晩年のバーンスタインの美学がツイメルマンという理解者を得て、自由自在に演奏したものだ。交響曲や弦の協奏曲よりも豊満な演奏ぶりなのは、やはりツイメルマン（後年の彼の弾き振りのショパンを聴くと理解できる）が触媒になったのが大きいと感じられる。1番は60年代初めのグールドとのライヴ音源があるが、そこでも50分を超す演奏をしていたが、当時のアメリカ流でもっと早く演奏したいのに不満を持ち、前置きで自分のテンポではないと違和感を漏らしていた。それが、四半世紀を経て、自らがそれを上回る遅さで、同じ曲を演奏するとは本人も思いもよらなかったに違いない。2番も昔のワッツとの分かりやすい演奏に比べて、威容が大きくなり、ファーストチョイスには適さないが、今でもこの曲の演奏を語る上では欠かせない。
