"おや、どこかで見たようなタイトルや作品番号、調性だと思われるかもしれませんが、それで正解です。ソナタはピアノ五重奏曲として、そして変奏曲は管弦楽曲としての形態で演奏されることが多く、当盤収録の2台ピアノ版の作品番号には、あたかも烙印のような""""b""""の一文字まで入れられてしまっていますが、実は両曲ともこちらがブラームス自身の手により先に完成されたオリジナルです。そのため出来の悪い編曲にありがちな不自然な部分は全く無く、充実した2台ピアノ作品としても楽しめる一方、「分身」たるオケ曲等と比較しても面白いという、2倍おトクな盤となっています。"
