Brahms' sonatas for violin and piano were all products of his summer vacations. Indeed, in the generally melancholic demeanor of Brahms' output, these pieces shine out like rays of light. His often ponderous style gives way to a more improvised mood as if he were enjoying their development in practice with fellow musicians. Still, the romantic gestures, cast in elegant classical forms, are pure Brahms.
Kyung-Wha Chung impresses with her calm elucidation of these sonatas. She draws a variety of hushed sounds from her instrument, but also makes her points in the darkly passionate moments of these sonatas. Her partner, Peter Frankl, holds up his end of the bargain as well. Slower tempos are favored throughout.
With its literate notes and stylish booklet photography, EMI has a fine release here.

チョンとしては今一の出来である。小さくまとまっているという感じでブラームスの情感ももうちょっと欲しい。ヴァイオリンの音は引き締まっているがやや硬く伸びやかさに欠け、むしろ引き締まりすぎている感じがする。やはりデ・ヴィートの域には遠い。音圧を低めにすれば聴きやすくはなるが、やや退屈を覚えるところもあり、星３つが妥当なところであろう。世紀の名演ヴィート盤は別にして８種持っているが、デュメイやズーカーマンのほうが成功していると思う。それにしても７０年も経つのにデ・ヴィートを超える演奏が出てこない。あと５種ぐらい聴くつもりだが、フルトヴェングラーの英雄みたいなものか、と思ったりする。ラトルとのコンチェルトも今一満足できなかった。

　私が現在持っているソナタ全集のＣＤはこれの他にクレーメル、ヘッツェルの盤のみ。３種それぞれ聴き応えがあり楽しませてもらっている。この盤の中で好きなのは繊細な音の運び。決して線が太いわけではない。線は細い方になるとおもうが芯が強い演奏と感じる。ここぞというところの音の強さ（大きさではなく表現の意味で）がハッとさせられる。加えて、甘くないポルタメント（と表現していいのか音楽の知識がないためよく分からないが･･･。）がしびれる。他の演奏であまり聴かれないのでその部分を聴きたい時にはこのＣＤがおすすめ。

この演奏になかなかレビューが現れないことが不思議です。デ・ヴィート以来の名演奏です。入手する前は、いつもの演奏者の張りつめたような演奏からして、この曲にはあっていないと思い、あまり期待していなかった。ところが聴いてピックリ。　音もいつもの「細身」ではなく、堂々としたもの。絶対に買って損はしませんよ。
