The violinist Midori has been a celebrated performer for more than 35 years, this recording of Beethovens Violin Concerto, complemented by his two Romances for violin and orchestra, marks the composers 250th birthday in December 2020. Midori plays with the Lucerne Festival Strings in a recording made in Switzerland shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic had caused the cancellation of a planned concert performance and international tour. Beethoven guided my colleagues and me, says Midori, his work focusing and inspiring us, our concentrations heightened, enveloped together in our musical efforts ... I am reminded that he was a man of strong beliefs who took firm stands on many major issues of his day Beethoven's determination still provides a model for humankind.

ベートーヴェンのヴァイオリン協奏曲は、いろいろな演奏を聴いてきましたが、なかなか好みの演奏に出会えませんでした。特に第二楽章の後半、2回目のcatabileから2オクターブ半の跳躍に至るところが、難しいなと思っていました。ここを満足に聴かせくれるのは、みどりさんしかいないだろう、と密かに考えていたのですが、録音してくれるか、ずっと気になっていました。今回、こういう状況下、この演奏を聴くことができたのは、本当に良かったと思います。二楽章は、思ったより速めのテンポでしたが、しっとりとした歌いこみと、気合の入った跳躍は、素晴らしいです。私にとっては、この曲のLAST HOPEという感じです。

「魂との…」とか「渾身の…」とかの文字が躍っていますが、演奏はそうした表現とは無縁の節度のきいた真摯なものです。注目すべきは五嶋本人が記載したライナー4ページ弱の文章です（英語とドイツ語）。ベートーベンの経済状況（要はお金の事情）や、曲についての説明はなかなかの読みごたえがあります。協奏曲のロンドをバッハの無伴奏と関連付けての話もなるほどと思いました。コロナ禍での録音に至る経緯の説明もあり、商品紹介の「〜五嶋みどり　ライナーノートより〜（輸入元情報）」はそこから部分抜出和訳しているようですが、誤訳であるといったら失礼でしょうか？是非、ご自身の目で読んでいただけたらと思います。音楽（CD）と文章（ライナー）で、満足度2倍、いやそれ以上のものだと思いました。
