Beethoven's violin and piano sonatas are mostly early works; only the last postdates the "Eroica" symphony. The first three are often compared to Mozart, as they follow his three-movement model and exhibit some of the same grace, but there's a hint of a more aggressive personality. Numbers four through nine were all composed between 1801 and 1803, early in Beethoven's second style period. They have wider emotional range, more interplay of instruments and begin to incorporate scherzos into a four-movement scheme. This group culminates in the famous "Kreutzer," a spectacular showpiece with exciting exchanges between violin and piano. The tenth and last sonata, written in 1812, is the most gentle and intimate of the cycle and looks forward to Beethoven's later music in its strange serenity.
Anne Sophie Mutter and Lambert Orkis recorded this set in a series of recitals given in Wiesbaden in August 1998. Theirs is a dynamic hands-on approach which emphasizes the combustible nature of the music, they underline its many marked gear shifts while taking the liberty of adding a few of their own. The playing is often breathtaking and the sense of teamwork is awesome. Clearly, considerable effort has been made to achieve such telepathy.
