アート・ブレイキー＆ザ・ジャズ・メッセンジャーズの代表作というばかりでなくモダン・ジャズを代表する1958年の名盤。このバンドのブルージーでソウルフルなサウンドの完璧な結晶は、現在でも、おそらくハード・バップ真骨頂の録音として名を馳せている。当初はセルフ・タイトルだった本作は、ティモンズの忘れられないオープニング・トラックが人気を博したため、後にMoanin'と改名された。また、 "Along Came Betty "や "Blues March "など、ジャズ・ソングブックのスタンダードとなるようなゴルソンの作曲もいくつか紹介されている。
