    死刑囚と接触する環境にあった元東京拘置所医務官として死刑囚と無期囚の心理を観察、分析、研究した書。科学者であり、学術論文であることを承知の上で、敢えて死刑を残虐な刑罰であると認定する。死刑も死刑囚も知らない者たちが好き勝手に、いかにも軽々しく「死刑」という言葉を口にするが、この二文字にどれほどの重みがあることか。死刑問題に関心のある人だけでなく、裁判員という憲法違反の疑いのある制度の下、誰もが人間を殺す命令を下す危険を持つようになった今、すべての人に読んで、死刑について考える機会としてもらいたい。
