Charismatic young conductor Vasily Petrenko launches his Shostakovich Symphonies series with the Eleventh, a highly charged depiction of the 'Bloody Sunday' massacre of over two hundred peaceful demonstrators by Czarist soldiers outside the Winter Palace in St Petersburg in 1905.

The 1905 Symphony is scored for a sizeable orchestra of triple woodwind, four horns, three each of trumpets and trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, celesta, harps and strings. ( NAXOS )

ブックレットも何も読まずに聴いてみた。 ショスタコーヴィチをここまで聴きやすくした演奏もなかなか無いだろう。それは悪い意味で言っているのではなく、ショスタコーヴィチ演奏の歴史的な垢を削ぎ落とした姿をここに聴くことができるという意味においてである。こんなに抒情的な音楽であったとは。音楽自体の性格もあるのだろうが、まるでブラームスやマーラーのような響きですらも発見した。 「今風」なショスタコーヴィチであろうが、作曲家が散りばめたテクニック、そして隠れた和声をこれほど美しく、そおして迫力感を失わずに演奏しているオケもさることながら、指揮者の洞察力、そして新鮮な感覚は特筆に値する。 純音楽的な素晴らしい「1905年」である。

この作品のテーマである恐怖と憤怒を表現しきるには、ブラスとパーカッションの炸裂以上に、頻出多用されるユニゾンの扱い方が大きなポイントとなるが、その点で言うとこの若い指揮者の演奏は残念ながらまだまだ不十分。上滑りしないていないな音楽作りには好感が持てるので、今後に期待する。なお終結の和音の後に鐘の余韻だけ残す（スコアには指示がない）やり方は、ロストロポーヴィチの模倣かもしれないが、やや安直の感が否めない。
