BMG continues the reissue series of the seminal albums by hard rock legends URIAH HEEP, one of the big four UK rock bands along with Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. The extensive re-mastered and expanded versions are curated by URIAH HEEP founding member, Mick Box. Each includes a bonus disc of tracks never before available and extensive liner notes with input from Heeps Mick Box and Ken Hensley. Originally released in 1972, The Magicians Birthday was Uriah Heeps fifth studio album and second consec- utive RIAA GOLD certified release. Includes extensive liner notes with revealing accounts from Heeps Mick Box and Ken Hensley and a second disc of unreleased material.

これも全盛期のアルバムなので一聴の価値ありだが、ただ若干弱い曲があるように思う。すべての曲が素晴らしいというわけではないので、でも２ＣＤになって貴重テイク満載はうれしい。ロジャーディーンのジャケットも素晴らしい。いい時代のいいアルバムです。

3rd”Look at Yourself”, 4th”Demons and Wizards”に続く5th。3作品ともに初期のURIAH HEEPの名盤として誉れ高い。70年代の音が好きな人なら気に入るでしょう。敢えてまず一枚なら、私はこのアルバムをお勧めします。3作品の中ではメロディが受け入れやすいと思います。 それにしても私が持っている再発盤にはシングルカットバージョンやら未発表曲やらが9曲も収録されている。ありがたい話ではあるが、9曲はちょっと食傷気味です。

The follow-up album to ”Demons and Wizards”, recorded in the same year, and while still touring constantly (a grueling pace that was to lead to problems down the road for many of the members), this album maintains the quality of its legendary predecessor.
