The Hendrix-Cox-Miles experience was one of electrifying R&B, heavy funk, hard rock and sultry soul-and fans had four chances to see that explosive unit at the Fillmore East, with two shows each on December 31, 1969, and January 1, 1970. The final album that Jimi authorized for release during his lifetime was Band of Gypsys (1970), which contained six songs from the sets on January 1. In 1992, the 2-CD Live at the Fillmore East set compiled songs from all four shows. Now, finally, we have the chance to hear one of these full, legendary sets just as it was planned and executed by Jimi and his immensely talented mates. Here, we have no Purple Haze, Hey Joe or anything else heard on his previous albums with the Experience. Instead, this was to be a new beginning, as the Gypsys blaze through Power of Soul, Lover Man, Hear My Train A Comin', Changes, Izabella, Machine Gun, Stop, Ezy Rider, Bleeding Heart, Earth Blues and Burning Desire.
