The fifth season of "ER" is just as traumatic as the four seasons that have gone before it. Doug and Carol's relationship is finally over as he relocates across the country, and even Carol's pregnancy cannot convince him to return. Kerry is devastated when she is passed over for the permanent ER chief position. The job goes to the extremely popular Amanda Lee but, as the series progresses, we discover that she's not quite what she seems. Following her departure, the job goes to the hated Dr. Romano who turns the ER into a living hell for all the staff. New medical student Lucy clashes with Carter, and things get far worse as she struggles to come off Ritalin. Several female employees, led by Doyle, make allegations of sexual harrassment against Romano, but Dr. Corday is forced to retract her statement when he threatens to expose the relationship between her and Benton. Dr. Carter accidentally runs over a boy when he is fleeing the scene of a riot in an ambulance. One of the paramedics is shot, leaving Carter feeling guilty as he knows the bullet was meant for him.
A high-octane series that doesn't let up from the opening moments to the season finale.
