The performance of Verdi's famous Messa da Requiem celebrating Toscanini's fiftieth anniversary of death in 2007 took place at the beautiful basilica of St Mark's in Venice where it was first performed on 22 May 1874 to mark the first anniversary of the death of the Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni.

このＤＶＤの価値は、まずヴェネツィアのサン・マルコ教会で収録されていることにあるだろう。宗教音楽はコンサート・ホールよりも断然カテドラルでの方が心に迫るものがあるからだ。それでこそＤＶＤならではの良さが発揮できよう。マゼールとトスカニーニ響＆フィレンツェ５月祭合唱団の演奏は、ソリストを含めて実に力感と躍動感に溢れたものだ。また音質、画質ともにほぼ最高の状態と言ってよい。
