「スコットランド」は、古楽演奏も含め優美なものが多いが、昔のトスカニーニやミュンシュの演奏を、さらに速くコントラストを激しくしたような男性的で強い意志を感じる演奏だ。録音の良さのせいか、古楽器の小編成でも響きがやせないのはさすがだ。

もともとワイルドな曲調を持つ『スコットランド』はアーノンクール、ブリュッヘンの好演から見ても、ピリオド・スタイルとの相性の良さは明らか。さて、そこでピリオド最過激派ファイの登場だが、第1楽章第1主題の確保から早くも一気にテンポが上がり猛烈な響き。贅沢な不満を言えば、すべては想定範囲内とも言えるが、アダージョ楽章の対旋律の強調などはやはり面白い。N響に客演したホグウッドの凡演にがっかりした後だけに大いに溜飲が下がった。弦楽のための交響曲中、最大の大作である第11番も素晴らしい出来で、打楽器入りの｢スイスの歌｣を第2楽章に入れて演奏している。
