Gustav Mahler created his Fourth Symphony riding a wave of euphoria that follows a bout of writer's block. His renewed confidence and inspiration come through in the music. In the hands of renowned conductor Pierre Boulez, the piece is the subject of a beautiful and spirited recording.

ブーレーズがＤＧで録音したマーラー全集中では、最もすんなりと「ブーレーズ的演奏」として聴き手に受け入れられている盤であろう。１〜３楽章でしばしば新ウィーン学派の響きが聴こえるし、第２楽章のソロ・ヴァイオリンの無機質な不気味さも際立っている。それでいて、クリーヴランドの純化された音色は、第１楽章第２主題では陽光射す清新な美を聴かせる。第３楽章の弦楽合奏の静謐な美は、初期ウェーベルンのさわやかさだ。唯一の難点が、第４楽章のソプラノがヴィブラート過剰で興ざめなことだ。古来、アメリングやポップが起用されてきたパートに、この歌手を連れてきたのは誰なのだろう？どうもブーレーズは歌手の声質や歌唱スタイルと曲との相性に無関心な傾向があるように思える。この歌唱で星１つ減点。

ここんとこいろんな指揮者でこの曲を聴きましたので、アプローチの違いなど、はっきりと感じ取れます。ブーレーズのこの演奏、意外にも精妙な「歌」にこだわった、メロス志向が前面に出たものとなりました。あ、でも、そう言えば、第８番でも同じようなアプローチだったな。妙に理屈をこかず、マーラーの叙情性に素直に従った、そんな演奏で、これはこれで結構ではないでしょうか。但し、嫋々と歌うのではなく、ポルタメントにこだわりながら、やや細身の歌を聴かせます。クリーヴランド管弦楽団、見事な優秀性を誇示しております。バンゼの歌は特に何もなし。総じて、大変な高水準な演奏ですが、聴き手を酔わせ引き付ける魅力に欠けるという感は否めません。なので、ちょっと辛い点をつけておきます。ぜいたくな悩みではあります。

このディスクが出た少し後でしょうか，ザルツブルクでウィーン・フィルを振った演奏を聞く機会に恵まれました．ソロはラーションだったかな．ビロードのような滑らかな音がオーケストラから出てきて，第1楽章が終わったあとはため息が出るほどでした．美しい．ブーレーズの演奏は，オケの音色を輝かしくしていました．4番にはまさにぴったりの演奏でした．ディスクはクリーヴランドですが，こちらはやや冷ややかな美しさです．
