ホフマンスタールとR.シュトラウスが最後にたどり着いた完璧とも言える台本のオペラ。音楽を無しにして、言葉だけで演じても充分に成立する。結婚をテーマにした現代的な内容の作品で、もうひとつ興味深いのは、女性として産まれたが幼い頃からやんちゃで、男として育てられ、友人にも男として認識されていたが、思春期の終わりに女性としての性に目覚めるというアラベラの妹役が登場するが、性の多様性という今日的なテーマも入り込んでいる。全体的に歌うようなメロディーは少ないが、第2幕では結婚を誓い合うオペラらしく歌うような美しい二重唄がある。キリ・テ・カナワにとってアラベラは当たり役ではないだろうか、彼女の歌唱に聴き惚れた。若き日のティーレマンにも注目だが、メトロポリタン歌劇場のオーケストラの演奏が少し荒く感じられる。これがウィーン国立歌劇場だったらと無い物ねだりを心の中でしてしまう。
