Although The Seasons has had admirers over the years, the set as a whole has never attained wide popularity. Nonetheless, the graceful Barcarolle (June) and the evocative, jingly In the Troika (November) are viewed as masterpieces. Mily Balakirev's oriental fantasy Islamey, a most difficult work, suits Yefim Bronfman's virtuosity to a T.

旧ソ連で生まれ、１５歳でイスラエルに移住...

旧ソ連で生まれ、１５歳でイスラエルに移住したロシア系ユダヤ人であるブロンフマンにとって、チャイコフスキーはお国ものと言っても良いのだろう。このピアノ独奏曲「四季」も、深い共感と理解を抱いての演奏だと思う。美しい曲の魅力も相まって、実に印象的ですばらしい四季だ。余白に収録されたバラキエフの「イスメライ」も初めて聴いたがなかなかいい曲だ。バラキレフも昔はロシア五人組などと言われてもいたが、今ではそうは言わないらしい。キュイとバラキレフは作曲家としてはレベルが低すぎて、ボロディン、ムソルグスキー、リムスキーコルサコフとは対等とは言えず、ただ単に強力な仲間の一人であったにすぎないからだ。
