2010年10月、ベルリン・フィル・デビューの際にネルソンスが振ったショスタコの8番はこれ一発だけで彼の名を忘れがたく刻みつけるほどの圧倒的名演だった(デジタル・コンサートホールのアーカイヴにある)。その約1年後のこの演奏は、それに比べればやや落ち着いた印象。煽られると燃え上がりやすいベルリン・フィルと渋めのコンセルトヘボウというオケの差も、感触の違いに影響しているだろうが、曲をしっかり手の内に入れたという安定感では、こちらの方が優っている。ネルソンスの美質はどこかと言えば、まず若さに似合わぬスケールの大きさ。若い指揮者らしく、速いテンポで畳みかけることもできる人だが(このディスクでは前座の2曲がまさにそう)、8番の第1楽章のような長大で、息の長い音楽を遅めのテンポで、じっくりと腰を割って聴かせることもできる。しかも、オケの各パートの隅々まで指揮者の意志が通い、スコアが余すところなく掘り起こされているのを実感することができる。第1楽章のクライマックスに続くイングリッシュ・ホルンの嘆き節など、実に老練だし、速くなりがちな第3楽章も「ノン・トロッポ」を守ったままで、この音楽の狂気を見事に描いて見せる。オーケストラ・コンサートとオペラの両方で、今や向かうところ敵なしの指揮者だ。
